Review: She’s the Man

Hilarious

Saw it sometime back and have to say that this is one of the funniest and hilarious rom coms I have seen in recent times. She’s The Man is also one of the recent movies to incorporate a Shakespearean reference on the lines of 10 Things… another absolutely brilliant movie. This one borrows elements from the Twelfth Night and substitutes it in a contemporary setting of high school rivalry with dashes of humorous romance thrown in. It works beautifully.

The story revolves around high school soccer player Viola Hastings (Amanda Bynes) whose school soccer team gets cut. To get back to the ones responsible, she joins a rival school Illyria impersonating her brother. What follows is a hilarious and tumultuous journey that builds up to a fairly predictable climax. But the predictability of the story doesn’t take away the sweetness and the freshness that the movie exudes in every scene. Even in the most ordinary of scenes the writer’s come up with some clever devices to drive the story and not let it fall into the boring clichés.

However what makes this movie watchable and ultimately memorable are the performances. Amanda Bynes is absolutely adorable in her portrayal of Viola. She exudes charm in every frame she is in. Channing Tatum is a revelation. He could easily be the Tom Cruise of his generation with his natural swagger and comic timing. They really fit the leads well. As for the supporting cast, they all do a pretty good job. Laura Ramsey does a good job as Olivia. Vinnie Jones makes a mark in his brief appearance as Coach.

All in all, a fun movie to watch on a lazy evening with friends and family. You won’t be disappointed. :D
